BROWN DOG DESIGN. THE BARK IS ON.

There are designers, and then there is Chanin Walsh, from Brown Dog Design. I've never seen a more "soup to nuts" approach than in this dynamo of a Graphic Designer. With a brand-minded philosophy, Chanin meets every project with a full circle strategy. She thinks in "the big picture" manner, crucial to the business success of her clients.

Meeting with Chanin is much more than talking about business cards and identity design. Chanin discusses your goals, your needs, how best to get there, and how best to convey that to your customers and clients. And then she designs the heck out of that concept.

Chanin is also a respected community leader, and walks the walk in the ways she gives back. She is the founder of the Women's Business Forum of Bucks County, an organization with over 500 members (www.womensbusinessforum.org - see Feb. 15, 2009 blog), founder of First Friday in Doylestown, PA., is on several boards and committees including Planned Parenthood and the Mercer Museum, has raised money for area charities through an annual social event, and has won several awards honoring her work and service to the community.

BROWN DOG DESIGN: For the evolution of your business.

FREELANCE FOLK.

If you look to the right, you'll see I wear many hats. In those hats is music. Within music are gigs, festivals, radio, songwriting, and the annual INTERNATIONAL FOLK ALLIANCE CONFERENCE, a conference about the business of music, as well as musicians seeking to be heard by the people that do the booking. In it's 21st year, and with 1700 attendees, the conference was held last week in Memphis, Tennessee.

Freelance comes in all forms, and that goes for music too. From performing songwriters to agents to entrepreneurs with innovative marketing ideas, the folk alliance was jam-packed in more ways than one. There is an exhibit hall where the business of music is alive and well, with individual musicians, publications, managers, record companies, marketing support organizations, instrument makers, and more. There are seminars and panels during the day, and music in meeting rooms and hotel rooms as far as the eye can see. Late into the night, musicians perform in hotel rooms overtaking 3 solid floors of a 4 star hotel in Memphis, hoping to be heard by festival presenters, and the like.

Because it would take up far too much blog real estate to mention everyone who brings their efforts to the Folk Alliance, here are just a small handful of participants, what they do, and how to reach them. You can help support music, artists, and the broad spectrum of freelancers it takes to get the job done by visiting these resources online. GREAT MAGAZINE. GREAT RESOURCE.

Freelancers love good resources. Especially ones that provide a good read, have a place to place an ad, and are basically free.

Bucks County Woman magazine has been a fresh voice added to the mix of magazines speckling shelves and mailboxes in the area. With JANINE CARROLL at the helm as Associate Publisher, and CHANIN WALSH (of Brown Dog Design) as the innovative new Creative Director, the magazine is stocked with great articles, embraced in a clean and beautiful layout.

Expanding on the creativity of women in the area, this month's cover story is about master furniture designer, Mira Nakashima-Yarnall. Mira discusses with BCW what it has been like to carry on the legacy of her world reknowned father, George Nakashima, while maintaining her own identity in the field.

BUCKS COUNTY WOMAN MAGAZINE is rapidly growing and garnering great praise from readers and advertisers. if you have a freelance business and are looking for a great place to let people know more about what you do, contact Bucks County Woman about placing an ad. Tell them freelancepicnic.com sent you!

LET THE PICNIC BEGIN!

Ever wish you were on a picnic? Ever wish you could just take a picnic basket down to the river, and escape the day? Well, millions of people are having 21st century picnics these days. As long as their trusty laptop is one of the key ingredients in the basket, they can picnic the day away, and get some work done too, so long as they keep the ketchup away from the keyboard.

I began freelancepicnic.com because I wanted to help others with tips and tricks related to being a freelancer in this rapidly evolving world of freelancealots. So onward to blogland. Let's see where this boat leads us....
